Boho Themed Photo Props (15 dreamy ideas)

Spring is upon us!  Now is time for some more spring photo inspiration.  Last year, I did an article on Spring and Easter photo props.  To check out that article, click here.  This year, I decided to another spring themed prop post.  However, I went very specific with this one!  This year we are looking at Boho Themed Photo Props.

If you haven’t heard of boho photography before, Boho is short for bohemian.  These images are very light, with brown and beige coloring.  The idea is that the theme is natural with a lot of nature elements.

Usually a backdrop is lighter colored, usually white or beige.  The props and outfits are also usually light and natural looking.  In leu of a studio backdrop, woods or a wheatfield also work for a stunning boho location.

Aside from the colors and location, what props work well in these types of photos?  What makes something fit into the category of Boho Themed photo props?  I have gathered a list of the most popular props to use for a boho photo shoot:

  1. Stones and branches
  2. Ladder
  3. Giant flower wreath
  4. Flower crown
  5. Neutral colored rainbow
  6. Flowers
  7. Wicker Chair
  8. Feathers
  9. White rug
  10. Tee Pee Tent
  11. Giant vases
  12. Vines
  13. White decorative pillows
  14. Baskets
  15. Blankets

Let’s take a look at each of these in more detail:

Stones and branches

Boho is all about looking natural.  Stones and branches fall into this category for sure!  You can have piles of rocks or branches sticking out of a vase.  If the branch is large enough, you can have the subject sit on it.

If you are doing an outside shoot, you can look for areas that have naturally occurring bolders, rocks, branches and other natural elements that will work well with your subject.  You may find boulders that are large enough for the person to sit or lean on.  You can then add in some of the other props on this list!

Ladder

If you use a ladder, make sure it is a beautiful wooden one.  Plastic ladders would not go with the vibe!  Usually you can find a decorative ladder at craft stores.  You can decorate it with flowers to give it an even stronger boho vibe.

Giant Flower Wreath

A giant flower wreath can look amazing in the background of a boho scene.  If you get a generic wreath, you can also swap out the flowers for the different types of shoot you are doing.

I have also seen where they get a ring large and strong enough to hold a person!  After decorating it with flowers, they then securely suspend the ring and have the subject sit in it like a swing.  Or, if the base is wide enough, the subject can sit in the ring while it is on the floor.

Flower Crown

This looks great on the subject!  For outfits, a long flowing dress looks great with a flower crown.

Neutral colored rainbow

Instead of the traditional red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple rainbow, try one with natural colors such as brown, beige, and pink.  This looks good in the background of your subject.

Flowers

Flowers work so well for so many different types of shoots.  Boho shoots are no exception!  Use light colored flowers, although here you can add in some pastel blues, pinks and yellows to give your session a little color pop.

Wicker Chair

While you can use different kinds of chairs, the wicker one works very well for these sessions.  The texture from wicker really helps bring home the boho theme.  You can use one of those wicker chairs that has a huge back to it, or a simple rocking chair.

Feathers

Since feathers are so natural to begin with, they work wonders in the boho setting.  They are also naturally textured and normally light in color.  You can use large feathers in a large vase, or small feathers in a dream weaver.

Sometimes you can use Peacock feathers, although traditional Peacock feathers are a little bright.  You can use creative lighting to dull the colors, or you can look for brown and white peacock feathers.

White Rug

A white rug against a hardwood floor looks so sharp in boho photos!  For the rug, you can use faux fur, woven, knitted, or any other material that shows texture.  If you don’t want to use solid white, you can also go for one that has a natural pattern in it.

Tee Pee Tent

A white teepee tent is a super popular choice for boho sessions.  A bright white teepee, whether mini or full sized, looks great in these types of shoots.  You can also use the teepee in camping and cake smash sessions as well.  You can usually find these types of tents on Amazon or Walmart.

Giant Vase

A giant, natural looking vase works very well in boho sessions.  Use one that is brown, white or beige, and that will really accent your theme.  You can also put long leaves and feathers in the vase to give it even more of role in your session.

Vines

If you use vines, choose ones that have a muted green color.  You can also choose vines that have flowers on them as well.  Try wrapping the vine around a ladder to give it some structure.

White Decorative Pillows

Pillows are a popular choice for boho sessions!  The key here is texture: White pillows with embroidery on it are a great choice.  Also, ones that have fringes or tassels on it add even more texture to your picture.

You can do small decorative pillows, or oversized ones that the subject can sit on.  Many boho sessions I have seen the person is sitting on the floor or standing.  If you opt to have them sit on the floor, you can use the pillows for them to lean on.

Baskets

Baskets work similar to large vases.  You can fill them with feathers, flowers, or let them stand alone.  Make sure they are neutral colors and have a lot of texture to them!

Blankets

Nothing is quite as cozy as a blanket!  Use something that is not only a neutral color but has a lot of texture.  Soft faux fur, or heavy crocheted, so many different kinds would work for a boho themed photo prop.  Pair it with a pillow for the full effect!
